Questions for the Journey

A Few Things You May Be Wondering

Pilgrimage may be unfamiliar. Here are some practical questions people often have before making the journey.

Before You Decide

If something you need isn't answered here, we'd much rather you asked than wondered.

  • What is a Waypoints pilgrimage?

A small-group contemplative journey across Aotearoa. We travel by vehicle, stopping at selected waypoints for short walks, silence, scripture, reflection and conversation.

  • Do I need to be a Christian?

Waypoints is shaped by the Christian contemplative tradition, and scripture and prayer are woven gently through the journey. People are welcome to come with questions or uncertainty.

  • Do I need experience with contemplative prayer?

No. Everything is gently introduced, and there is nothing you need to perform or achieve.

  • How much walking is involved?

Waypoints is primarily vehicle-based with short walks and periods outdoors at selected waypoints. It is not a long-distance walking pilgrimage.

  • How large are the groups?

Groups are intentionally small, usually 6–10 pilgrims.

  • Where do we stay?

North Island: comfortable Airbnb accommodation. South Island: comfortable motel/cabin accommodation.

  • What about meals?

Meals are shared together and form part of the companionship and rhythm of the journey.

  • How long are the pilgrimages?

North Island, Sacred Waters: three days. South Island, Deep Calls to Deep: two days of pilgrimage, with Day 3 for breakfast, closing and the journey home.

  • How much does it cost?

    Contact us for current pricing.

  • When are the next pilgrimages?

Contact us for upcoming dates and availability.

  • What should I bring?

A detailed packing list will be provided. Generally, come prepared for Aotearoa's changeable weather, short walks outdoors and time spent in nature.

  • What happens if the weather is bad?

Weather is part of journeying through Aotearoa. We adapt the pilgrimage where necessary and make decisions with the wellbeing of the group in mind.

  • Will I have to share personal things with the group?

No. There are opportunities for conversation and reflection, but no pressure to disclose anything you would prefer to hold privately.

  • Can I come on my own?

Absolutely. You don't need to know anyone else beforehand. Companionship develops naturally along the way.
